Despite loosening restrictions, many people are only supporting businesses where they feel safe from coronavirus.

Every day more stores and offices in Virginia are reopening for business as statewide restrictions to prevent outbreaks are relaxed. But that doesn’t mean an immediate return to business as usual. Consumer attitudes have changed over the past few months.

Recent research makes it clear that customers are only frequenting establishments that they feel have taken adequate precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Staying safe and healthy is a major motivating factor for consumers right now. Even those who are not inclined to wear a mask or practice social distancing may have loved ones living with them who are at higher risk. Customers and clients need to know that you are taking measures to keep them safe while they are supporting your business.

Effective messaging is key. Make sure they know that you are open, and know what measures you are taking.

Many businesses went quiet when the shutdown began and stopped posting on social media platforms. If your customers haven’t heard anything from you in months, it’s unlikely that they are thinking about you, and may assume you are closed. If you silenced your social media presence, you should begin sharing your reopening plans as soon as possible. Consider investing in a digital ad campaign to boost that message in your area.

Clients and customers should know what to expect before they arrive in-person. Can they come inside, or are you offering curbside service? Have your hours changed? Are the new hours reflected on your Facebook Page and your Google My Business Listing? Create a checklist to update each platform you use.
